Great Britain

A quick guide to the countries that make up Britain, and how to talk about them.

Britain is constituted of 4 countries; England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. The flag is called the Union Jack and is made from each flag of each of these countries (Except Wales actually because they were already a part of England when it was designed).

To the outside world Britain stands as one united nation. But it’s actually more divided then that. During the Olympic games we complete as Britain, so athletes from all 4 countries come together and compete. But with football, the Nations favourite sport, we compete at the World Cup separately. I wouldn’t ask anybody why because nobody knows.

England – Historically England has been the centre of Britain. Home to the royal family, central government, and the capital (London). England has a history of invading and forcing it policies onto Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Each country wants its own independency, and the only one to successfully do so is the Republic of Ireland. We are all friendly enough nowadays so people mostly joke, but it’s important to recognise that A Scottish person (for example) will not enjoy being called English. Treat each country as an individual and you will be fine.

Scotland- Most well known for its countryside, extreme weather, and tough people. Scotland is a wild and rugged place. Scottish people are hard-as-nails, and extremely proud of their country. Rightly so because it is breath-takingly gorgeous. They work hard, play hard, and drink hard! England has fought to keep Scotland more times than anyone can remember and they are still fighting for their independence today (politically now gladly). Watch Braveheart if you haven’t already.

Ireland– Famous for its landscape, friendly people, Guinness, and rain! The Irish love to have fun and know how to enjoy life. Nobody drinks like an Irish person! Northern Ireland is a part of Britain and uses British Pounds as currency. ROI (Republic of Ireland) is the southern part and is a separate country now. They use Euro’s as currency so be prepared if you want to visit. England and Ireland have a long and violent history (research the Potato famine and you will get an idea why), but the 2 Irish countries have also waged war between themselves as well. The main division is a religious one between Protestant’s and Catholics. Ireland is mostly at peace now and is a country everyone should visit. You will be welcomed with open arms.

Wales– A mountainous, dramatic country with super friendly people and a happy approach to life. England and Wales have a comparatively amicable relationship so it’s a popular holiday spot for the English. The Welsh Jurassic coast is a UNESO world heritage site with some of the oldest dinosaur fossils ever found. If you come to England then definitely plan a trip to Wales for the fresh air and stunning countryside.

Don’t worry if you get confused with what Great Britain actually means, because we do too! Essentially they are each a separate country with their own uniquely vibrant cultures. You can refer to every person in these countries as British, but most will prefer if you call them Irish, Scottish, Welsh, or English. Every country in Britain is worth exploring so if you plan to live or visit here then you will have some beautiful and friendly neighbors!
